Additional Information
This record was given away free at the 1st anniversary gigs at the London Marquee on 3-6 July. The 5th and 6th gigs were cancelled after an argument with the Marquee management. The trouble was The Damned insisted on hanging up a backdrop, designed by Dave Vanian, while the Marquee refused to allow it because it obscured their famous logo.

Copies were also sent to members of their original fan club, known as the Damned Disciples. Some copies included a Stiff Records compliment slip.

250 copies were also given away in an NME competition.

'I think I was apprehensive about it, because I hadn't seen them before or met them; but, in fact, when we got to the studio, I'm not sure who was more apprehensive, them, about being in a BBC Studio, or me about working with them. The amusing thing was quite a few other people had heard that the Damned were in, and every now and again we got people creeping in through the door, looking in through the window to see if they were being sick all over the place or spitting at us. Which they weren't at all, of course; they were four of the nicest blokes I ever got to work with.'   Jeff Griffin, Producer

'I just remember it being a very fast session. Five numbers down, and Jeff away back to Radio 1 with the tapes. We finished very early.'   Mike Robinson, Engineer

'A note about the artwork

The sleeve artwork used on this single is, as you can see below, designed by Michael Beal, who has worked with The Damned since 1976. It should be noted that "Circa 1981/2" in fact refers to the year 1980, as stated on the back of each of the 3 scraper-board drawings. Why was it not used by The Damned for "The Black Album"? Rat Scabies hinted at this when, at the time, asked about the gravestone used on "The History Of The World Part 1":

"Yeah, I don't personally agree with it. I mean to me it looks like Hammer Horror. The thing with this group is that it's four individuals. I don't always go along with the ideas that come out and go through".

It seems that the ghoulish image, commisioned by Dave Vanian, simply was too much for the rest of the band, who vetoed its use. It is therefore with great delectation that NDN Records now some 21 years later finally can present this piece of classic Damned artwork.

(Henrik Poulson - July 6, 2001 - www.ndnrecords.com)'
